So here is what we did. You buy the wood and have your handy husband glue and nail it together(to get more details just look at the tutorial).
Then you paint it. I always keep a gallon of my trim paint that I used in my house that way all my whites match. Since I paint everything white it is nice to have it on hand.

This was harder than expected since the wall the ledges are on is shared with the bathroom and is slightly bowed. In the interest of keeping it real, here is a picture of what happened.
Three holes where one should be.:( I should probably fill in the other holes and touch up the paint but for now it just made it easy to decide where to set my pictures.
Next you fill up your ledges. Voila!
These shelves really do cost $10 to make or in my case $5.;)
