After much ado ("No. Put that down! Mommy doesn't need your help right now. Don't eat that. No, that is not a rocket. Stop climbing on it!") I had it together.
I originally wanted a butcher block top but to get it the right size it would have been well over a $100 and totally defeat the purpose of DIYing an island. So I headed over to the Home Depot and bought one 2 x 10 inch pine board. A total of $10. J cut it to size and screwed it together. We stained it 'Early American'. I didn't want it to dark since the base is dark and our existing countertops are dark as well.
Now I have an extra work surface and extra storage. Yeahaw!
Look at those rims.
The top is not really 'food safe' so we will use a cutting board whenever we are chopping stuff up.
The size of the cart is perfect for the size of our kitchen. Plus it is on wheels. If it is in the way just roll it out of the way.
A place to prepare food. A beverage station at parties. Dessert table. Coffee service. Fun ride for the kids. The list goes on and on.
I love the chevron design on top!!!
ReplyDeleteHow did you attach it to the base? Is it just resting on top?
ReplyDeleteWe attached blocks of wood to the underside of the top at each edge so it would not move around. Thanks for reading.
Deleteok! Thanks!
DeleteHow did you screw the 2 x 10 boards together? I don't see any screws .... (looks great btw)
ReplyDeleteCan someone tell me what J-cutting it means. I followed everything but that and I would like to try it. BTW, apps like LetGo, 5 Miles and OfferUp rival Craig's List extremely well. Thou can find kitchen carts or these metal carts at great prices locally.
ReplyDeleteHello, I know this is an older post but I would love to do this project and wonder if you might share the dimensions of the cut wood? And also let me know how the island is holding up, anything you would have done differently?
ReplyDeleteThank you!
do you have a link for the cart?
